Overview of NASA's BIG Idea Challenge

The Breakthrough, Innovative, and Game-changing (BIG) Idea Challenge is an annual engineering design competition organized by NASA. It aims to foster the development of cutting-edge technologies for space exploration, engaging undergraduate and graduate students from U.S.-based colleges and universities affiliated with their state's Space Grant Consortium. Each year, the competition focuses on a new theme aligned with NASA’s current priorities, offering students a chance to contribute to the advancement of space exploration.

Participation and Process

Teams of 5-25 students, along with a faculty advisor, submit detailed proposals for innovative space technologies. These proposals undergo a rigorous review process, and 5-8 teams are selected as finalists. Each finalist team receives up to $150,000 to develop their concepts over nine months, culminating in the creation of a technical paper and a proof-of-concept demonstration. These efforts are showcased at the annual BIG Idea Forum, where teams present their projects to NASA judges.

Support and Opportunities

Finalist teams benefit from substantial financial support, covering costs for hardware, materials, testing equipment, and software. This funding facilitates the practical development of their proposed solutions. Additionally, the competition offers a unique platform for students to engage with NASA professionals, gain valuable experience in project development, and potentially see their concepts further developed for future space missions.

Impact and Recognition

The BIG Idea Challenge not only enhances educational experiences but also contributes to NASA’s mission by fostering innovative solutions to critical space exploration challenges. Winning teams gain recognition within the space industry and the academic community, opening doors for future research and career opportunities.
